The Convent of Pleasure

The Convent of Pleasure is a closet drama about a utopian retreat where women can live and love freely without men. It was written in 1668 by Margaret Cavendish. A closet drama is a genre of dramatic literature intended to be read rather than performed on stage—a play that can dodge stageability and censorship, and has done so throughout history. In July 2024, NRT presented a special one-night-only reading of this very weird, very funny play.
