Director's Note
Earlier this year, New Relic held an open call to find a new play to stage this fall. Until now, we’ve exclusively produced plays written before the 19th century. This was an opportunity for us to expand our mission beyond the classics by staging a new work that wrestled—in some way—with the open call's theme, mythology.
The call brought us a remarkable array of voices from across the globe, and among the many submissions, IN THE MOUTH OF THE BEAST emerged. This play, written by CA-based playwright Baylee Shlichtman, appealed to me for many reasons: its puzzle of a setting, its unique use of direct address, and of course, its vibrant central relationship.
Apa and Nel, father and daughter. What do we choose to reveal to our parents? What do we shield our children from?
This play is also loosely based on the myth of Iphigenia at Aulis, engaging directly with NRT’s mission to seek a firmer grasp on the present with the ideas of the past, reviving communal history in modern memory. If you don’t know the myth—don't look it up before the show. If you do, enjoy the ways in which our world and Iphigenia’s world diverge. :-)
Thanks for coming! I hope you enjoy what our incredible team has made.
